An Idaho Falls man is reportedly missing and presumed dead following an avalanche near Mount Jefferson in the Centennial Mountains of Island Park.

The Fremont County Sheriff’s Office received a call just before 5 p.m. Wednesday reporting that a snowmobile rider was caught in the avalanche and was missing, a Sheriff’s Office news release said.

The other members of the snowmobiler’s group attempted to find him but were unsuccessful, the release said. Fremont County Search and Rescue and Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the call along with Air Idaho and the Island Park ambulance.

Due to the snow conditions, weather and length of time that had transpired, the decision was made to postpone additional searching until conditions improve.

The victim’s name is not being released until after notification of next of kin, the release said.
