The Waffle Iron to celebrate grand opening

Nate and Jennifer Felton have opened the Waffle Iron in Ammon.

The restaurant, located between Cafe Sabor and Fuji in the Edwards Theater complex, will celebrate its grand opening Monday.

After living in Charlotte, N.C., for a time the couple decided to bring the family back to the West. When they moved back, they decided “to bring a little bit of of Charlotte with us,” co-owner Jennifer Felton said in an email.

While in Charlotte, the family acquired a taste for “wonderful delicious Liège waffles,” Felton wrote. So when they moved to Logan, Utah, they started up the Waffle Iron, a food trailer that sold the gourmet waffles.

The Waffle Iron food trailer did so well that Nate quit his full-time job to open a restaurant in 2015. The couple’s first brick-and-mortar restaurant opened in Logan, Utah.

Felton wrote that Justin Hamilton, an Idaho Falls native and the owner of Logan’s Cafe Sabor, helped them make the transition from food truck to restaurant after buying a waffle from them at a county fair in Utah.

“He came back and gave us his card, saying that if there was anything he could do to help, we should give him a call,” Felton wrote.

Hamilton helped the Feltons put their business plan together and gave them pointers on everything from buying equipment to negotiating a lease agreement.

Earlier this year, the Feltons opened their second shop, this time in Ammon.

The New York Times’ cooking column had this to say about Liège waffles, “These rich Belgian yeast waffles take a bit of planning (an overnight rise), but one bite and you’ll forgive the extra time they take and the giant mess they leave on your waffle iron. With their buttery brioche consistency and pockets of sweet sticky sugar throughout, they’re decidedly more dessert than breakfast.”

While Liège waffles are most commonly known as dessert waffles, the Waffle Iron also serves savory versions, such as the “Go Green” that has a freshly cut avocado, fried egg and a cilantro-lime sour cream sauce.

“We have really put a huge emphasis on finding the best and freshest ingredients, many of which are organic, no preservatives, natural and always fresh,” Felton wrote. “Nothing we serve has been frozen.”

The Waffle Iron also has a full espresso bar and it offers a number of non-caffeinated specialty drinks.

Blackfoot Movie Mill, a seven-plex

theater, to open in June

Julie Ann Goodrich, executive director of the Greater Blackfoot Area Chamber of Commerce, in conjunction with Mayor Paul Loomis announced that the Blackfoot Movie Mill will open a seven-plex theatre in June in the former Blackfoot Motors building on Bridge Street.

The theater is the result of a collaborative partnership between the Greater Blackfoot Area Chamber of Commerce, Loomis, City Economic Development Director Kurt Hibbert, Bingham County and the regional economic development organization REDI, a chamber news release said.

Kent and Ingrid Lott are the owners of the Blackfoot Movie Mill, the release said. The Lotts also own the Centre Twin and Paramount theaters in Idaho Falls.

The Blackfoot Movie Mill will show first-run movies offering adult tickets at $7 and matinee, child and senior tickets at $5, the release said. The theater “will sport cutting-edge laser projection technology, which provides a significantly brighter and clearer picture than traditional theatres, surround sound, stadium seating, family atmosphere, and offer kid-friendly summer-programs as well as accommodate corporate and business use of the facilities,” the release said.

Business of Distinction Awards

The Greater Idaho Falls Chamber of Commerce will present the Business of Distinction Awards on Nov. 11.

The cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m. and the awards ceremony starts at 7:30 p.m. The event will be held in the Willard Arts Center. Tickets are $45 for individuals and $75 per couple. Tickets can be purchased online at

The gala will begin with a cocktail hour and reception at 6 p.m. It will be held in the Willard Arts Center, followed by the awards ceremony in the Colonial Theater at 7:30 p.m.

D. L. Evans Bank announces

Veteran’s Day Food Drive

D. L. Evans Bank branches are collecting nonperishable food items for the annual Veteran’s Day Food Drive.

Collected items will be donated to the two veteran’s homes in Idaho. The food drive will conclude Nov. 10. The bank also will hold a Veteran’s Day open house Nov. 10 at all its branches.
