An unidentified man died Tuesday after being trapped in an avalanche while snowmobiling at Sheep Creek.

The Bonneville County Sheriff’s Office and Bonneville County Search and Rescue responded at 4:06 p.m. to a report of an adult male buried in an avalanche in the upper bowl of Sheep Creek about six miles from the trailhead, a Sheriff’s Office news release said. Sheep Creek is directly east of Palisades Reservoir.

The man, who was snowmobiling with a group of friends, was located and freed from the slide, but did not survive, the release said. Deputies and search and rescue personnel were expected to work through the night to bring the man’s body out of Sheep Creek.

Further information will be released pending notification of family.

The incident was the area’s third avalanche death this year.
