Man charged for sharing child porn with minor

BLACKFOOT A Blackfoot man was arrested July 5 after police discovered child pornography on his phone and the phone of a minor with whom he shared the images.

David Oly McBride, 41, was using a loaner phone from a phone store. He returned the phone June 25, telling staff it was not working properly, and borrowed a different phone.

The store’s staff gave him the new phone and discovered an image of a naked underage girl as the background for the lock screen of the phone he had turned in. The employees found more than 100 images and several videos depicting children ranging in age from 7 to 14.

Staff called the Blackfoot Police Department, but told the officers one of the staff members had reset the phone, according to a probable cause affidavit. The employees who reviewed the photos told officers most of them depicted young girls posing nude, sometimes with underage boys.

Police obtained a search warrant for electronic devices McBride owned. Police conducted the search, seizing his phone and the phone of a 15-year-old boy.

McBride’s phone contained 863 images and videos of child pornography. Child pornography was also found on the 15-year-old’s phone. McBride admitted to downloading the images and sharing them with the 15-year-old, the affidavit said.

McBride was charged with nine counts of child sexual exploitation by possessing or accessing sexually exploitative material, punishable with up to 10 years in prison for each charge. He was also charged with disseminating material harmful to minors, a misdemeanor punishable with up to a year in jail.

A preliminary hearing is scheduled for 8:30 a.m. July 19 in Bingham County Courthouse. The judge set McBride’s bond at $100,000.
