Mackay girls hold on for 27-26 win at Watersprings

In November’s meeting between the Watersprings and Mackay High School girls basketball teams, the Miners fought off a fourth quarter charge from the Warriors for a 35-34 victory.

Thursday night’s game at Watersprings was also decided by a one-point margin.

Watersprings outscored the Miners 13-2 in the fourth quarter to put the game up for grabs. Mackay held on for the 27-26 win, however, when a 3-pointer by Watersprings’ Taeya Dixon at the buzzer went long.

Watersprings faced a 12-point deficit entering the fourth quarter, but head coach John Yadon had a plan: pressure defense.

The Warriors clamped down on Mackay’s ball handlers, forcing turnovers and getting easy baskets. Mackay was held scoreless for more than seven minutes as the Warriors chipped away.

With 1:17 left in regulation, Joanna Hayes tied the game at 25-25 with a 3-pointer from the right wing. On the next possession, she fouled out.

Mackay, which never trailed Thursday, hit two of their final four free throws to seal the win.

“The ladies faced their fair share of adversity tonight, and I was proud of how they responded,” Yadon said. “We have a couple of starters injured tonight and despite not shooting the ball well, we found a way to claw back in the game and give ourselves a chance to win.”

Riley Moore had a game-high 12 points while Remi Wojciechoeski chipped in 11 for the Miners (7-8, 4-4), who host North Gem today. Mackay coach Kashia Hale declined to comment after Thursday’s game.

“Mackay has a couple players that are tough to guard,” Yadon said. “We did a good job on Remi and Moore, they really could have hurt us.”

Dixon led Watersprings with 10 points for Watersprings (3-9, 3-7), which hosts Butte County on Tuesday.
